We had about 10-12 inches of snow dumped on us in KS yesterday. Today, I had two young entrepreneurs knock on my door and asked if I’d like my driveway shoveled. Personally, I enjoy the workout, beauty of the fresh white snow and quiet time when I shovel (even though this was tempting as it was so much snow). I declined but offered them a cup of hot cocoa. They smiled and said YES.
I opened up the garage door for them to wait for me. When they told me they’d been out for two hours and their feet were numb, I invited them in my kitchen to rest and warm up while they drank the cocoa.
As we talked further, they told me they were ready to quit after my house. NOT ONE HOUSEHOLD had taken them up on their services! I was blown away…12″ of snow and people are stuck in their houses and yet all declined.
Since I had made some homemade white chili in the crockpot yesterday, I asked if they’d like a bowl. They were thrilled and said yes. They had not eaten breakfast. Eh gads. My heart sank the more we talked. They ventured out in the cold weather to help others and make a few dollars only to be turned away on empty stomachs and left with a disheartened spirit.
They said I was the only kind person they had met this morning. Others were polite but not kind. I couldn’t understand it myself so I wanted to encourage and help them.
After they finished, I gave them some oranges for later and a hug. I also told them which direction to go that I thought they might get some business. They left with HOPE and I’m glad God guided them to me. A small thing really, but I wanted to share this story because it is so easy not to realize the impact a simple gesture can make.
Everyone is fighting a battle of some sort. When you realize this, your heart becomes more inclined to want to see beyond your own struggles. Be the light in a dark situation…HOPE is a wonderful thing.
FOUR HOURS LATER…UPDATE – The two guys just stopped back by my house to thank me. They said “We took your advice and headed where you told us and everyone we asked said yes. As a matter of fact, people were flagging us down asking us to come and do their house next! Thank you so much for your help, it made all the difference.”
Life is good! Be of good cheer and encouragement. JJ Weeks song, “Let them see you” comes to mind.
