We are creatures of habit and sometimes that can lead to boredom. Keep stimulating your mind by trying new things and mixing things up. You’ll probably enjoy the new sites and opportunities once you step out on a different path.

Last night, I visited two different fitness locations (sponsors for my upcoming TWEAK the TREAT event: Olathe East Bowling and Midwest Ice). I’m use to going to my fitness center which is primary racquetball players, runners and weight lifters. As I pulled into the parking lots of these facilities, it was packed! The bowling alley was full of bowlers and the ice center had hockey players, skaters of all ages. Wow…it was awesome to see so many people being active in a variety of sports. My point, there are so many ways to be active and stay in shape, find what works for you and get a buddy involved with you!

Perception is an interesting thing…there’s always at least two sides to a story. Many tell me: “I don’t have time to workout”. Truth is what’s your priority? Good Health is something people tend to take fore granted until it’s an issue or gone. Most elderly will tell you they wish they would have taken better care of themselves when they were younger. Today, it’s not uncommon to see people sacrifice their health to gain wealth; only to later spend that wealth trying to get their health back. How stress out are you?

How to do it

You probably have a set route to work, the grocery store, and the babysitter’s — even to different rooms in your own home. Today, mix it up! Instead of going the way you usually go, find a new route. If you’re at home and can’t, or don’t want to, go out for some reason, take a different path than you normally would to get from one room or part of your house or apartment to another.

Why it matters

Scientists now know that in order to keep our brains sharp, we need to do more than recall information we already know (as is the case when you play trivia question-and-answer games). We need to tackle new things that take us out of our comfort zones. Physical exercise is hugely important too because our brains, like our hearts, need oxygen and blood flow to keep them agile and to create new brain cells. Activities like taking a new route to work nourish new connections in our brains and keep them fit. Making new friends, learning to play a musical instrument, even engaging in a friendly debate are also constructive activities. Just don’t try to do them all at once!
